How Music Affects Dogs
Added Tips
Aside from having a superior sense of smell, dogs also have more sensitive ears than human beings. In fact, they can hear frequencies from 40 Hertz to 60 Megahertz, far beyond the upper limit of our auditory spectrum. But with all that sensitivity in hearing, can music affect them the way it does to us? According to recent studies by universities and animal welfare institutions, a dog’s behaviour can indeed be affected by the music that they are hearing.
In one study, dogs were made to listen to heavy metal music that was piped into the facility’s PA system. The subject dogs, which came in all breeds, sizes, and ages, became restless and began barking loudly. However, when the piped-in music was changed to classical songs, the dogs gradually calmed down. At one point, they even lay down to sleep. Thus, letting the dog listen to classical music can decrease the animal’s symptoms of separation anxiety when its beloved master is absent. Surprisingly, pop music does not seem to have an effect on dogs. If there is any, it is negligible.
